Let me make this perfectly clear....

On this forum I am not going to tolerate vigilantes and firestorms of rude behavior on this site.

Some of you seem to think you are entitled to play cyber police here on Puna Talk. You are not and I will not allow it.

In any event where you might think something is amiss here then contact me privately and directly and I will deal with it.

No further warning will be given.

Are there any questions? Let's hear them and deal with them.

Perhaps it may be useful to clarify the group norms and expectations by posting a netiquette page associated with Punaweb showing samples of the sorts of statements which are considered over the line of civil free speech and venturing into vigilantism and rude behavior.

Quite likely people who are being trolls know perfectly well that is how they are coming across, yet some folks genuinely do have a somewhat different calibration on modes of communication. I have often found it useful when teaching classes with a diverse mix of students to provide concrete examples at the outset so everyone has a commonly held definition of what is welcome, acceptable, and unacceptable.

With absolutely no malice or rude intention beforehand some people from certain parts of the USA can come across as being deliberately rude in the perception of folks from other regions and cultures.

I myself have had no difficulties with Rob's management of Punaweb and appreciate the tremendous informational and networking resource Punaweb constitutes. If others are encountering difficulties of some sort then if they are not deliberately being trolls it may be useful for them to communicate where the confusion is regarding the expectations and group norms here; clear examples are quite concrete.

If you have to ask "Is it appropriate" it probably isn't.

Rob Tucker, you rock!

One point I'd like to bring up before someone tries to use it; the Bill of Rights guarantees that the government will not infringe on free speech. Last time I checked, Mr. Tucker and Punaweb are not mentioned in that document. Since it's his forum, it's pretty much his way or the hiway.

Thanks, Rob!

PunaWeb is at it's best when people share their Hawaiian experiences with aloha, helping each other, educating each other, even just playing silly sometimes.

PunaWeb is at it's worst when egos dominate, and the sharing, helping, and educating turn to preaching and provincialism, with a smattering of intolerance thrown in.

This is your website, Rob, and I understand that it exists (or not) at your pleasure, and in the manner of your choosing. If I don't like your rules of Puna-centric civil discourse, I certainly don't have to return. Nobody is pointing a gun at my head to force me to read what's written here.

Still, I keep tuning in, because on balance, the better part of PunaWeb shines through most of the time.

No worries! PW needs to be toned down sometimes. Rob, thanks for all your hard work!

I posted something that was probably a little off color for me a couple days ago.

So I was in a sour mood after reading about a racially motivated murder on the mainland. And I was mainland bashing. My post was removed and was sent an e-mail from Mr. Tucker.

I was venting. I guess he wanted to reprimand me for my rudeness.

This ain't High School and I'm not going to show up at the Principals Office.

So much for free speech on this Site.

Thank you for the input so far. I appreciate your thoughts.

Steven,
You always come forward with thought insight. I have pondered a longer list of rules but find I am unable to think up how many ways people can be rude and thoughtless.

Dennis' suggestion: If you have to ask "Is it appropriate" it probably isn't.

Comes as close to simple and concise as can be. I have tried to keep the parameters here as simple a as possible. Dennis' wording works for me.

The membership registration provides this:

In your use of these forums, you agree that you will not post any information which is vulgar, harassing, hateful, threatening, invading of others privacy, sexually oriented, or violates any laws.

Which should suffice if people paid attention but they don't. Some seem to be rather naturally civil and others simply aren't quite sure of the concept.

The forum opening page state this:

Note: National and world politics are not allowed. Local,
Hawaii County and State of Hawaii politics are allowed.

There is a reason this is called Punaweb and not Americaweb or whattheheckweb. This site was and is intended for Puna and it's place in Hawaii.

For kimo wires:

I understand that it is not enjoyable to have a post removed. The notice you received was merely official notice of an action. Your post was preserved. No reprimand was made or implied. If you want your post back I will send it to you. It was a simple post like many that would divert the energy of Punaweb into other diverse directions. It wasn't offensive or abusive, it was just not Puna.

Considering the capacity and variety of the world wide web I do not think it too demanding that Puna have a site focused on itself. If that is not sufficient for you then there isn't much I can do. You have made good contributions here and I am confident you will continue to do so. If you so choose.

To everyone I still invite questions and dialogue.
Assume the best and ask questions.
