what are the little black bugs on gardenia flowers and how do you get rid of them?

Those are thrips. Mix a few drops of dishwashing liquid with water in a spray bottle, mist the flowers as they open. You can dip cut flowers in this solution too.

They just come with the territory! Just clip the ones you want, then put a little water in your kitchen sink or in a small mixing bowl...couple drops of dish soap and swish them around...rinse them off and they are gorgeous! I was wondering about them when we first moved here and my neighbor shared the soapy water thing.[:X]

thanks for the "solution" to my problem. gardenias happen to be my most favorite flower.

Me, too. They will be the first thing I add to our yard. When I was little, my grandmother used to comb my hair gently, not like my mother ripping through the rats. She would always put a gardenia in my hair afterward. It is the smell of love to me.

we've made several attempts to grow them with no success on o'ahu. the ones we have now were already here when we bought the house. all that we have done is trim them a little and they're doing great, minus the bugs. now that we've got the "solution" to the problem, we'll be enjoying them even more.
