Soil sources
#1
I am almost finished making several raised beds and tree rings. Now I need to fill them with a planting mix--15 yards or so.

In the past I have purchased cinder, soil and dump mulch to mix together. This can be rather expensive, especially for a load of soil. Does anyone know of a relatively cheap way to get a good quality planting mix? (We are in Orchidland, so digging it up is not an option!)

Jerry, we are taking out a bit of red cinders (~10'x24' x 5-7 in deep) from our side yard (the remodeler had added a thick layer of red cinder, sandwiched between black plastic when he added the ohana.... & built up the ground 7" above the proper drainage level (guy was definitely not 'head of the class' material...), so we are now removing this.... & removing the bits of UVed plastic & such.... so the pile I am creating is fairly clean material

It is free, but I am digging it up by hand, so the quantity would be a yard or 2 a week..... until it is dug up or my back gives out....

I have soil. It is heavy clay and need to be amended with mulch; we use the stuff you get for free at the land fill. If you want some, call me when it is dry, bring up your pick up truck and we can load a pile for you..l I have a tractor with a bucket so it is easy.
