John Corbin

John has been a fixture in Puna at many events - he has lived in Black Sands for years! You often probably have seen him with his long henna red hair and a kilt. John is not doing well at all (was working with Hilo VA - he is now in Menlo Park, CA VA ) - his cancer has metastasized to other organs.

This is an email I received from Wendi (John's daughter) today:

Hi all! Some of you know, and some might not, but John (my dad) has been diagnosed with cancer. He found out a couple months ago, and ever since then he’s been getting progressively worse. However, he just started chemo and radiation so we have hope that he will make it through this.

I have been posting a blog this past week with updates on his health, and will continue to update it as often as possible. You can see it here: http://www.egeekbme.com Please share this with anyone who might want to know how John is doing.

Thanks,
Wendi

My husband knows John well. We have visited him here in the Bay Area since he came for treatment. Praying he recovers well from his treatments. He has a lot of will and hope. Aloha.

I'm not sure if friends of John Corbin have heard the most recent news. I am so sorry to say that he has passed. I wanted to share this link to his daughters blog in case anyone needed to read more about this. We saw him a couple times recently here in the Bay Area just before he started chemo. He told us he thought he had at least another five years. This was quite a shock to hear last night. Peace to all. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

There is a brief yet quite clear shot showing John garbed in his delightfully colorful and distinctive kilted attire out on the playa of the Black Rock Desert in one of the movies about Burning Man. In fact, he is in the best film of the bunch if I recall correctly: Gifting It, though it is possible that clip might have been in one of the several others.

I am so glad I met John in the desert, however briefly. This surprise of his running on ahead to the summerlands before I had a chance to get to know him better as a Puna neighbor reminds me anew to not take the people and events of the day for granted. Heartfelt condolences to his family. I am sure John's life and deeds will be mightily celebrated by many at Black Rock City this Burn and his memory honored at the Temple, as well as in Puna.

It is not our part to master all the tides of the world but to do what is in us for the succor of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule.

Astonishing skill! This archer is a real-life Legolas and then some!

It's free spirits like this that make Puna great. One spirit is now a litle freer.

Steven, I believe there is a group setting up a memorial at Burning Man for John. I haven't heard yet when the Big Island services or memorial will be, if there is one.

We have definitely lost one of the more colorful and vibrant Punatics.
