Cell Phone Coverage
#1
I have found that I got the best cell phone coverage on the Big Island from AT&T. We recently moved to the bottom of Hawaiian Shores (about 2 blocks from the ocean), and I have no coverage. The Veizon coverage map looks promising. Does anyone have any real life experience with cell phone coverage in my area?

Thank You,
Charlie

I also have AT&T. Bought a Wireless extender. Think RadioShack can order it

AT&T is known to have the worst coverage on the Big Island.

Really? I wonder how mine, T-Mobile, ranks on the crappy scale? Maybe someone can recommend something better as I am not pleased with it.

Taropatch (and planecharlie),

Don't know about your location but have had several visitors with cell phones from various companies and the one that seems to have the best coverage on the east side and Puna is Verizon. I used to use AT&T but it was dreadful and my girlfriend used to have T-Mobile but that didn't work very well either. She used to drive to Hilo in order to get a decent signal (I live at the bottom of HPP).

I don't particularly like endorsing Verizon, I've had the odd problem with them, but suspect they might be your best option.

The only areas in Puna I've had a hard time is right on the coast along Kapoho-Kalapana Rd and that's with Verizon. I've gotten service just about everywhere on the island (again the only bad areas are on the extreme shorelines and the deeper valleys [waimanu / waipio]).

On my lot in Leilani AT&T has worked fine including for an aircard for a computer (until I got DSL). But when driving around the subdivision there are areas with no signal. It may help some that Verizon has just been approved by the county to put up a tower here that may be up early next year. It was supported by all of the emergency responders because it should reach all or most of the red road. Other carriers are expected to rent space on the tower. I think that a tower has been approved in Nanawale as well.

T-mobile is pretty good near major towns but just get into really lower Puna or even north of Hilo up hill a bit a no signal. The hills and terain seem to have a large effect on the coverage I had there recently w/ my T-mobile. If you are thinking about living in a out of the way place T-mobile sucks.
