Anybody out there know propane freezers?

Building a stand alone refrigerator wouldn't require a permit unless you direct wired it to the wall. Building a refrigerated room would probably technically require a permit. Not that I've ever looked that up, though, I could be entirely incorrect on this but this is how it would seem to be to me.

When I lived on a small sailboat in the harbor we had no power so many folks had ice boxes instead of refrigerators. My friend who lived three boats over built one that would stay cold for over two weeks on one 18 pound block of ice. He really insulated it well, had the opening at the top and had a water loop in the drain so the cold air didn't leak out. It was mostly foam panels, some sort of reflective space wrap and fiberglassed and then painted blindlingly white since it was also outside in the cockpit which had sun during parts of the day. He would only open it once or twice a day, though.

"I like yard sales," he said. "All true survivalists like yard sales."

Thanks Rob, actually, a walk-in was mostly what I was thinking. You're right insulation. You can actually purchase quite good aerogel foams for semi-sensible money at this point, and at least for the door that makes a lot of sense.

Still working on it.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF POWERING REFRIGERATION BY WOOD GAS? USING LEAVES WOOD CHIPS and sticks a gentleman in the Appalachian mountains area of the United States was able to produce enough wood gas to power a mid sized pick up truck, a mazda b2200 1.8 ltr. engine over 20 miles. surely enough to boil ammonia...... just a thought.

How about burying your walk in freezer underground, accessing it from a trapdoor in the top, and using the chest type freezer with the lid off to cool the whole walk in freezer?
imho best of both worlds,

Jay,

Having sold and serviced gas refrigerators for some 40+ years, I have some experience. If under fired, they just won't start the process, and if over fired, will start creating heat in the evaporator; the reverse of what is needed. A thermostat is what balances the heat, and is the challenge.
