definitions from noaa:
"hurricane" (the North Atlantic Ocean, the Northeast Pacific Ocean east of the dateline, or the South Pacific Ocean east of 160E)
"typhoon" (the Northwest Pacific Ocean west of the dateline)
"severe tropical cyclone" (the Southwest Pacific Ocean west of 160E or Southeast Indian Ocean east of 90E)
"severe cyclonic storm" (the North Indian Ocean)
"tropical cyclone" (the Southwest Indian Ocean)
Regional names for the same phenomena 'cept they spin the other way south of the equator
23 1/2 degrees either side of the equator being the traditional limits of these storms if I remember my climatology

Aloha, I am another one of those storm trackers. I came across this website through Mauna Kea and it is accurate with in 15 minutes another words it has a 15 minute delay. Very good website.

Lana is now south of us (300 mile south of Southpoint). South shores were pumping this afternoon (esp Pohoiki) .

Is there a reason why they all head West? The spinning of the Earth?
Could be, but I imagine the prevailing wind direction is a factor as well.
They do spin the other way round (I think it's counterclockwise) in the southern hemisphere, and I would think that part relates to the earth's spin. I would be interested to know from our science folks.
