This site is suggesting 10-18' but you know a lot depends on which way the shore is facing. Pohiki had 20-25' for Flossie and Vacationland's were much smaller - 8-12' range.

Who knows? Hilo Bay may break big too! Havent seen it big there since 2003 or 2004? maybe.

Getting even weaker.
A 25-knot wind as described by wikipedia:
"Large branches in motion. Whistling heard in overhead wires. Umbrella use becomes difficult. Empty plastic garbage cans tip over."

January 2008, I saw it! The waves were breaking up on the road, people having rides of up to a few minutes.

I was talking about the year it was breaking so big the chain link fence was 3' deep in water when the wave broke. The chain was catching big boulders and the wash of the waves was at times over the grass and onto Kam Ave.

We were at Pohoiki for Fossies arrival, from Sunrise till about 11am.
Would of stayed longer but the police moved everyone out of the beach park area [V] then closed the entire beach front and made everyone who was watching the surf, pick up and leave.
Was a real bummer unless you made it into the water... [Big Grin]

http://weather.unisys.com/hurricane/e_pa...index.html
(thanks for that link, Bullwinkle!)
shows this as one of its predictions for the path of Felicia:

48HR VT 11/0600Z 20.6N 154.6W 40 KT

this can be translated as:

8pm, Aug 10 (Monday) 20.6N 154.6W (70 miles NNE of Hilo) 40-knot winds

Show your work:

11/0600
means 6am on August 11th UTC. Subtract 10 hours to get 8pm August 10th (Hilo time)

Hilo is at 19.7N 155.1W

20.6N 154.6W is about 70 miles away, mostly to the north (in line
with the south coast of Maui) and a bit to the east of the easternmost
point of Hawaii. You can type these coordinates straight into
www.googlemaps.com to see where they are.

http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~cvm/latlongdist.html will calculate the
distance between two points defined by latitude and longitude.

Finally, at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaufort_scale
a 40-knot wind is described as Beaufort 8 with land conditions as
"Some twigs broken from trees. Cars veer on road. Progress on foot is seriously impeded."

Looks like it's veering off to the north, even north of Maui.

We were just at Pohiki at 12:45 PM - surf is not of notable size - maybe 5-8', little blown out - rolling northeast to southwest. Everyone is standing around waiting and watching....... a couple of guys out - park is supposed to be closing at 3 PM. High tide this side is just around 5 pm so we'll see what happens.

Honolii is breaking about like yesterday. Nothing exciting. I have been down there every day doing video and stills for a project. Should be an extra high tide, moon was close to full last night.

I also ran to KTA to get some things for a dinner we are having tonight and it was a total zoo, but people were not buying hurricane things, frozen food, meat lots of booze. Something always smells fishy in that store, but nobody else has things like lump crab meat.
