From the Trib Herald:
"Project AWARE is pleased to support Nautilus Dive Center, Hilo Bay Watershed Advisory and Kids Dive In, Hawaii. Divers are the guardians of our underwater environments – they often see first hand the effects of marine debris on our delicate ecosystem. This event is the largest single day volunteer event on behalf of our underwater environment. It's a fantastic example of how people can work together to take action." said Jenny Miller Garmendia, Director of Project AWARE Foundation.

"It's not too late to get involved," said Bill DeRooy at Nautilus Dive Center

"If you're interested in participating, drop by our store, or email:kidsdivein@usa. com. And you don't have to be a diver to get involved. Bring your friends and family along and help make clean waters a reality."

On Sunday September 20, from 10:30am–1:30 pm divers and those concerned about the health of Hilo Bay are invited to join an Underwater Cleanup Around Coconut Island (Moku'ola). We will meet at Coconut Island Park Pavilion. This event will include divers removing underwater debris from around Coconut Island and volunteers on shore assisting with debris removal and logging debris information onto data sheets. This data is important for recording changes in the health of our bay. If you are interested, you may contact: Kids Dive In, Hawaii; phone:982-7292; email:kidsdivein@usa. com. Divers are asked to contact Nautilus Dive Center; phone935-6939 or visit our website: www.NautilusDiveHil o.com.

All divers need to confirm participation before the day and will be required to bring their diver certification card and sign an Underwater Liability Release Form.

I want to thank everyone who came out & esp. our Punaweb-ers Wes & Judy!

Not all tallied yet, but we did remove around one ton of garbage from the island, and the channel around the island. Our Kayakers (inc. Judy) did a fabulous job of tracking the divers (including Wes) & picking up a wide range of debris items that the divers brought up from the murky channel. And a Hawaiian studies class from HCC was instrumental in recording all of the debris found.

This was definitely the most diverse range of debris (with a whole lot of recreational beach debris, golf balls, tires & cages)

Hope to see you guys out next April for Earth Day!
