We all assume it was gunshots... automatic weapons fire at that serious stuff. and no cops... I still say backfire from a vehicle has a higher probability
look for the simplest (less alarmist) solution first me thinks....

You guys are missing the point. I'm pretty sure the person shooting in HPP wasn't conducting physics experiments. The fact is that people are killed regularly around the country by random gunfire.
When you hear gunfire in a populated area, one of two possibilities exist; Either someone's life is being threatened and they are shooting legally, or they are illegally discharging a firearm for whatever reason. Either case merits a call to the police.
BTW, A semi automatic fires once everytime you squeeze the trigger. Bang, Bang, Bang.
An automatic fires constantly as long as the trigger is being squeezed. The rate of fire varies among automatic weapons, but most modern automatic weapons fire hundreds of rounds a minute- BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP.

Just a heads up... if you hear a whizzing sound overhead followed by a bang... get down
The bullet gets to you before the sound does if they are firing your way - its a weird sensation to say the least.
so far in Puna Ive had good luck -- experiencing plenty of bangs but no whizzes....

Backfire or gunfire, if you're not sure - call the cops.

It is extremely difficult,if not impossible, to count the rounds fired by an automatic weapon. As others have noted, it was probably an engine backfiring since it was heard in multiple areas and seemed to be moving.

The backfiring seems logical.
BTW, Bullwinkie, Always something bright to say, Kuddos...
One of my best friends , when we were in our early 20's,
used to have a Toyota Jeep that would backfire like that any time he reved the motor.
It would either make one really loud BANG like a 12 guage shotgun
if he floored it hard once.
Or if he pumped the pedal it would sound like a 9mm semi-automatic.
He used to get such a kick out of terrorizing people with that truck.
It was juvinile fun. Hopefully that's all that happened the other night too.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

kimo wires; you are onto something... The highly modified, small turbo engines can do exactly that under the proper circumstances. It does sound like gunfire.
It can be rather expensive to run around firing 7.62, .223 or 9mm rounds out of an automatic weapon.

I think it's most likely that everyone heard the same shots and called it in from various locations. i heard them on 3rd but they were coming from up the hill ,could have easily up near 7th, people on 13th would have heard them as close, and if you were outside on beach you could have heard them too.
I only heard one bunch and i have a pretty good ear for such things, its like when people call in seeing a fire in the distance you will get 20 different locations.
it wasnt an invasion just people with different perceptions calling 911
and listening to a scanner without the experience of many goose chases

I know the difference between a backfire and a gunshot! It was gunfire!
