SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WATCH

A TSUNAMI WATCH IS ISSUED FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII EFFECTIVE AT
0805 AM HST.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 0748 AM HST 29 SEP 2009
COORDINATES - 15.3 SOUTH 171.0 WEST
LOCATION - SAMOA ISLANDS REGION
MAGNITUDE - 7.9 MOMENT

EVALUATION

BASED ON ALL AVAILABLE DATA A TSUNAMI MAY HAVE BEEN GENERATED BY
THIS EARTHQUAKE THAT COULD BE DESTRUCTIVE ON COASTAL AREAS EVEN
FAR FROM THE EPICENTER. AN INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY TO DETERMINE
IF THERE IS A TSUNAMI THREAT TO HAWAII.

IF TSUNAMI WAVES IMPACT HAWAII THE ESTIMATED EARLIEST ARRIVAL OF
THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

0111 PM HST TUE 29 SEP 2009

All Beaches will be closed until Wed am, due to potential for dangerous current conditions & sea level changes

The beaches may officially closed but there are about 30 surfers in the water at Honoli'i and even the life guards are in their chairs.

Looks like American Samoa got the brunt of the tsunami with 141 dead.

A good time for all of out here to see where we live and what we need to do to be able to save ourselves when one hits the island

Bullwinkle, I agree this is a wake up call. The biggest Tsunami threat to us would be one with no warning created by local seismic activity.

You are correct, "good bye $40,000. car." However, that is one reason we have insurance isn't it?

I was more concerned about the 2,250 cruise passengers and part of the 924 crew that could have caused mass panic as they saw the ship going back out to sea while sirens were blasting and people were running everywhere.

Actually it is Samoa (Independent) that seems to be the worst hit, including with the death toll, even though the waves weren't as high. American Samoa got it in the biggest "city" --
but Upolu has coastal villages that were flattened, disappeared, and their tourist infrastructure, many family owned places, is severely damaged. []

It's all bad, in both Samoas.

I am donating to the Red Cross today ... and hope others will ...
I know this is keep it Hawai'i, but in the spirit of putting our concerns in perspective, we are the ones that COULD have been hit. It's not hypothetical for Samoa.
Not that we shouldn't be as prepared as we can, we absolutely should.
