Yes of course they are used for all kinds of emergencies, not just Tsunamis. For one thing I was a little worried that all of the ship people up in Volcano might not be aware of it, so even a siren going off up there would alert someone to turn on the radio to see what it was about.

Our house is directly under one of those sirens... and we can certainly hear it and feel it!

I wonder if the county actually tests whether those sirens can be heard everywhere, especially in low lying costal areas. Menuhene lives in just such an area, and he could not hear it at all.
