Best cell phone company to use in lower HPP?
#1
We just purchased a house in lower HPP. Whats the best wireless / cell phone company to use here?

Verizon or ATT is what we've heard - so I guess the choice is between these 2 providers. I plan on getting a smart phone, so data and voice connectivity are important.

Ryane,

Welcome to Punaweb.

This topic has been discussed a number of times. Take advantage of the "search" feature in the upper right menu... there should be good information.

Friends don't let friends use Nextel. We lived in 7 different places in widely varying parts of Puna and Hilo and our Nextel phone worked at NONE of them.

We are using a pay-as-you-go plan now and get fair reception everywhere there is service available because the plan has agreements with all the cell providers to hitchhike on their towers. If you don't make tons of calls it is the most affordable option and you aren't locked into a long term contract. Often people have trouble with reception inside metal roofed buildings, no matter who your provider is.

Carol, do you mind if I ask who your pay-as-you-go plan is with? I have been considering that option as I rarely come close to using contract minutes, no matter how I adjust plans.

Cheers,

Thanks for the feedback. No offense meant by posing the question again!

I did utilize the search before posting, looking for all subjects with "cell phone". Didnt yield many recent posts at all, so I thought it would be a worthwhile question to pose again.

Please let us know how you get on, I'm going to try to get Verizon or ATT mobile internet and for that I'll need a decent signal. I don't know of any other options here - I live in lower HPP as well.

Jerry,
We are using NET10, you can get the phones online from net10.com or at Wal-Mart and OfficeMax, maybe RadioShack, and you can get the minutes through the same places or by phone. It is $30 for 300 minutes, and 60 days. No contracts, no fees. As long as you buy another 300 minutes every 60 days you keep your number and roll over unused minutes.

So we spend $15 a month for all the cell usage we need. Just don't forget to buy minutes every 60 days, or else you lose your number. My husband is both frugal and a compulsive researcher and this was the best deal he could find, he says they are now using ATT towers.
