A tsunami advisory is issued for the state of Hawaii effective
at 1217 PM HST.

An earthquake has occurred with these preliminary parameters

origin time - 1203 PM HST 07 Oct 2009
coordinates - 13.0 south 166.3 east
location - Vanuatu islands
magnitude - 8.0 moment

Evaluation

the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued an expanding
regional Tsunami Warning and watch for parts of the Pacific
located closer to the earthquake. An evaluation of the Pacific
wide tsunami threat is underway and there is a possibility that
Hawaii could be elevated to a watch or warning status.

If tsunami waves impact Hawaii their estimated earliest arrival
time is

Yep, I was going to post this. My USGS email came through with 7.8. It's an 8.0?

Jeez, a lot of moving and shaking.

I'm not too worried about us, but I sure hope all the SoPac islands are OK.

yes, the earth is more alive lately. They downgraded to 7.8 after evaluation.

Ah... here we go again!

I hope Fiji is OK! Of course I hope everyone is OK, we just have close ties to Fiji.

And they got an "aftershock" of 7.3 - 15 minutes later. Most of us would think 7.3 is a huge quake.

Glen, don't you even think about getting on a plane and coming over this week. I know you personally attract earth movement. I'm just saying, help us out here.

I saw a Star Bulletin update that said no tsunami concerns for Hawai'i on this one.
The report I read from Vanu'atu said it didn't feel like the massive quake that it was.
That they've had a run of quakes and it felt about the same.
Sustained roll of over 30 seconds. Not sorry to have missed it!
Hope there's not going to be later news of more damage than originally thought.

ETA The warning/watch is now canceled region wide. Yay! [Smile]
