Beekeeping
#1
I'm looking at getting started in bee keeping but the online stores I'm looking at for basic supplies are killing me on shipping (yea, i know nothing new). Is there a local (big island) source for bee keeping supplies. I can't find anything online but in my experience small businesses locally don't do much online.

Thanks in advance

I think there is a beekeeping association here, they would know. Anybody have contact info?

The Big Island Beekeepers are having a potluck tomorrow (Thurs. Nov. 10) at 5:30 at the Extension building at 875 Komohana. They have a website but I do not have the link. The contact person is Cary Dizon 966-7421 cpd at dfarm.us

BEI in Hilo has some things like hive beetle traps and such. Maybe they have added more not sure it has been a while since I was there. I was using Mann Lake online seems like their shipping was a little cheaper.

Good luck in getting into it, with the hive beetle and mites carrying deformed wing virus it it a major battle now. I managed to get the hive beetle under control but I was off island for a couple of months and came back to find my bees have a virus. So between buying cooking oil for the hive beetle traps and powder sugar to treat for mites it is really getting to be a chore.

Any new info on the parasites or difficulties with beekeeping on the BI? I was thinking of getting a couple hives. Any suggestions? Thanks

Julie,
Unless you are seriously interested in bees and willing to work at it, do not bother. You can buy your honey a lot cheaper than setting up for a small number of hives. I have all the equipment and 50 years experience and still have not set up a hive because I have been concentrating on clearing our lot and planting fruit trees. If you do decide to keep bees, definitely get together with a beekeeper for some hands-on experience first. In the state Ag offices at Lanikaula and Kilauea, Danielle Downey would be a good person to contact:
