Aloha all, we are considering a move from HPP to Fern Acres in a month, and I was wondering what the crime is like in Fern Acres? How do the two areas compare? We are fairly new to the island so I don't know much about the different residential areas, so any input is much appreciated!

Try the fern acres association office, nice folks in there. They seem to have the pulse of the community. I think 15$ buys a membership

Hi DMarie,
Glad to see you found your way to this forum. I can't post a link to PunaWeb on the other site, but I think you will get much better answers here. This is one of the best online sources (that I am aware of) for input from a variety of people who actually live in Puna!
Just wanted to add...if you are planning to buy a home, be sure to check w/home owners insurance providers to see how distance from a fire station might impact the rate you pay. They see distance from a fire station as a greater risk. (This sometimes comes as a surprise to buyers during the escrow process.)

It would be a pretty poor rain forest if it didn't.... I sure do miss the macaws and howler monkeys... if you like costa rica ...
on the up side - woof and I - mostly woof - have yet to see a centipede or a boa for that matter.
We were ok with macaws in the shower in costa rica , had to draw the line at boa constrictors though .... time to move on when that happened
feel the same way about centipedes

Hey! As the "
" sign indicated, it was a joke! I love the rainforest and I'm with you in regards to the boas!

A friend of mine built a small house in Fern Acres. He still lives on the mainland, so only gets over there a few times a year. He has had no problems with theft etc.
The lots are two acres and are narrow, about 100 foot wide, but go way back from the street. Roads are paved and nicely maintained. Houses from shacks to mansions.

Even in jest - it is an agents agents professional responsibility never to denigrate any area in public. In my opinion, Its just poor form and unprofessional - resonates bias in my ears
sorry in advance if I offend

you can call the community police officer, since your question was about crime.. for example, last year, we had a community watch meeting and that month we had had 8 break-ins compared to 46 in hpp. (this was next door in Hawaiian acres). they have the actual numbers there. i only hear nice things about fern acres and since they are "neighbors" am over there alot... different strokes for different folks.
