Candidate for District 5 Council
#1
In 2010 I intend to be a candidate for Hawaii County Council District 5 so as to be a creative and productive force in helping to bring about positive change in my own community here in Puna and islandwide.
Goals
My prime goals as a Council member are to:
1.Influence the conduct of the Council’s business to be and to be perceived to be, in spirit and in fact law abiding, ethical, and clearly in the long-term interest of the wider community;
2.Influence the work of the Council, as a legislative body, to be open to scrutiny and meaningful participation by the public at large;
3.Strive, as an individual member, for my own work to be responsive to what my constituents have to say; and
4.Provide leadership in Food and Energy Sustainability.

So now we could expect the banning of gas and deisel, to be replaced with Island grown fuels only? Plus the ban on cheap imported palm oil already in effect! I don't see where your vested interests would in fact be beneficial to Puna except to further line your pockets, not bad for a little land speculation, think what you could do if in power!
How about jobs? Someone who would consider 15$hr without bennies a good wage might not be the best bet for a gov figure!
So now on you're reccomendation to Emily we get to curtail our dumping to 3 days a week, and be out by 4PM or forget it! Meanwhile our unlined dump pollutes the ocean with mercury (or is every bulb being recycled)? And we can be fined by a min wage worker if he finds a can in our trash!

...could someone with more net savvy terminology than me remind me of the definition of "flaming"

Aloha James,

From Wikipedia: Flaming (Internet), the act of posting deliberately hostile messages on the Internet.

It would certainly appear that you have been flamed here. I am glad you brought it forward for some thought. We have an election year approaching and we can all hope for a better level of dialogue. You are aware that anytime anyone steps forward into the public eye there is someone waiting to throw a stone.

However, Punaweb has a committee to assess PW policies and I will bring it to the committee's attention. While it is important for people to express their views it is also important for dialogue to not be stiffled. I'll see that the PW committee thinks.

Assume the best and ask questions.

James & Gtill,

While the post in question is provocative and can be considered a flaming post it is not especially egregious and contains legitimate issues. The PW Operating Committee is inclined to ask all posters to practice simple polite civility and to remind all candidates for office that all aspects of their goals, policies and intentions are open to question in an election.

Best Wishes to all,
Punaweb Operating Committee

Thanks for this, Rob.

This was really my concern, because the following statements by gtill have nothing to do with anything I have done nor any goals, policies, or intentions of mine:

"banning of gas and deisel...
15$hr without bennies ...
reccomendation to Emily we get to curtail our dumping to 3 days a week..."

Indeed, I WANT people to engage me in constructive discussion regarding any and all aspects of what I actually do say.

Aloha. My name is Loren Baker, and I am campaigning for the seat of County Council, District 5. I feel Puna is ready for integrity and common sense in their elected representative. My goals as a Councilperson are the same as my goals in joining our local Rotary club. We need to bring in infrastructure, improved roads, fire hydrants, and jobs. All of these things will work cohesively to improve Puna's image island wide. We are already started on illegal dumping of household items and junk cars.

My experience of owning my own business for thirty years, and the last ten years spent as a general manager, has taught me the value of seeing the Big Picture, and using common sense for problem solving. Once the Council begins to work together as a whole, I can see great things being accomplished.

Welcome to Punaweb Loren,

Perhaps you could start a topic about your background, community interests and intentions for the district.

I would be interested in knowing your opinion of the current council.
