Rain gutters - necessary?

My house doesn't have rain gutters.
I have a water well.Do I actually need them?

I could see possibly doing some type of raingutter catchment for watering in the Seaview area during dry spells. But one issue with rain gutters that I think about is to control run off and splattered walls, etc. Have you ever seen homes with attractive chains running down from the gutters, this channels the rain usually into some type of catchment, or away from the home.

What’s the width of your soffit (length of roof overhang)? If it’s less than 30 inches on a single story; I’d have them installed for error on the safe side.

Nope, I mean maybe.
I know you have a well and don't do catchment, but I don't know about grading around your house. Is it sloped and effectively drains all the rain away from your house? More important if on slab, but even if P&P you don't want the rain to flood under the house. Could be other maybe situations, but this one could be considered important.

I can't imagine a house without gutters here. Are they not "standard issue" when you build a house anyway? Was it a cost cutting measure to not put them on?

When we have heavy rains our gutters overflow and water pours down on all sides of the house; it's messy and potentially very damaging to the siding. However most of the time the gutters carry all rain water off the roof and into the downspouts, which in our case feed the catchment tank.

I've never lived in a house without gutters, especially in rainy climates.

I would say no to the gutters if not needed for catchment. They often cause rot of the facia and are a mantainance issue. As mentioned by David, make sure the water drains away from the house and haave gravel beds for where it runs off the roof or you will have trenches. That's assuming there is soil there to be eroded.

It's an extra expense, but I would rather funnel that rain water somewhere else besides the foot of my home.
