Whales to make a moaning type noise sometimes when the breech. I have a friend who is a marine biologist in San Diego who explained this and that from the deck of a boat in the water you should be able to hear some of their singing too if they are about 25 feet or less from the surface.
I have been on several Navy vessels out on the coast of California and Hawai'i and have seen, heard, and witnessed the whales singing, moaning, and clicking. It is one of the most amazing things that I have ever witnessed, next to swimming with dolphins in the Indian Ocean, 1000's of miles from nowhere!

We also had several sightings from our backyard in HPP on Christmas Day. Very cool.
