Waipi'o Horseback Riding suggestions
#1
We have a guest who wants to go horseback riding in/arround Waipio Valley. Am look for suggestions on good companies that provide this experience. So far we found the following:

Waipi'o on Horseback

Na'alapa Stables

Adventure Hawaii

Anyone try any of these companies? Recommendations on these--or other--companies would be appreciated.

Mahalo!

Have only tried Na'alapa, but they were wonderful and it was a memorable adventure. They are very familiar with the valley and are a couple with a beautiful spirit. Their love for the area is genuine, and shared. They are skilled at matching horse with rider and were accommodating about the disability of one in our party that prevented them from swinging up onto the horse. I'm a former horseback rider and I can tell you these are not your usual rental horses. These are happy, energetic, well-cared for animals that trot through Eden on a daily basis eating avocados (if you let them!). They are just as happy to leave the stable as they are to return to it (most rental horses are slow to leave the stable, but find their speed heading back). This was a great ride. Note the remains of villages along the way and listen to the song "Hi'ilawe" before you go -- preferably the Iz version, which contains one of the most stunning, overlooked guitar solos ever recorded in my view. It starts at 2:27, but watch the whole thing before you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYCjWcIloBc

Everybody on Tripadvisor recommends Na'alepa most highly. It's the only Waipi'o riding that gets any buzz.

Thanks for that link Kelena! Beautiful version of the song and wonderful photos of Waipio on that video. We have twice taken the wagon tour in the past year and enjoyed it very much. When we were there in January both of the falls that make up Hi'ilawe were really pumping. It was breathtaking!

Another very positive review here for Na'alapa Stables.

My 2 daughters, a friend's daughter, her friend and I all had a great time on the horses. The saddles were comfortable and we weren't sore afterwards. (Much better than riding on a camel which is the last animal I rode.) Absolutely great views of the valley!

I couldn't find Adventure Hawai'i. It sounds more like an activities broker of various Hawai'i tours than it does a specific Waipi'o tour, so that could be why. They could be brokering one or both of the other rides. I think booking direct with the actual vendor is the only way to go. So hard to deal with third parties if you need to cancel or otherwise have an issue.

Have fun!

You guys are making this decision so easy!

I originally wasn't planning on joining the tour myself, but based on your great feedback changed my mind. Can't wait to go now! Thank you everyone for taking time to post.

Aloha Smile
