We're bringing 7 parrots with us and would like to hear your stories.
I read that for the mosquito netting, it was acceptable to tape screen over the vents and doors, but on the phone they told us the entire kennel had to be "wrapped". What was your experience?
Also, the health certificate in blue ink: requirement or suggestion?
My advice on these matters is that its better to get the information from the source, but we've talked/emailed with different officials and each one gives us a different answer. Trying to figure out a way to placate them all.

Aloha terracore,
I brought Sweetpea my Meyer's over last year and like you I got conflicting info from everyone I called. It took us months to get it all straight.
It is a long winded chore to bring your babies over, I have all the paperwork here if you want to go over it there are some things they do forget to tell you and can be overlooked you have River's phone number give me a call.
For the vet 7 day quarantine it is not 7 days it is the hours that make up the 7 days if you know what I mean. They all need to be in a mosquito proof encloser for that time. When quarantine is up place them all in the mosquito proof carriers and you need to get them in Hawaii within 36 hours.
Now regarding the travel cages. You will need the Airline approved cages like the Hard plastic cat carrier. We drilled holes to apply a large perch and screw on water and food vessels. Then we placed Stainless steel screen over all openings with duck tape even the door. Write Live Animal, name of pet, name of owner, address where pet is going, and phone number. You will need to attach your bird Import Permit and Permit applications for restricted commodities to the cage in a plastic sleeve. Make copies!!!!!!!! (Not need to wrap entire carrier) Just the where mosqitos can enter!!!
Okay for your cert of health and all other paper work that you will be doing the day of departure. You will need three copies of everything for every bird. So make copies and have the vet sign each and everyone that needs to be signed in Blue ink so now they are all orignials. You will need this not only for the the Ag dept but for the airlines for every leg of your trip. Make a copy for you for the future as well.
Please don't hesitate to call for more information.
Morningstar Wolf.
PS: Make sure all birds are chiped and the chips working. I have a lot more information if you need just call! Sweetpea got here with flying colors!!!! Careful of TSA they will try to open the cages call for a TSA Manager!!!!! Those cages cannot be opened!!!!

Is this how the fruit eating feral parrots got to Hawaii?
I'm sure the enclosure will be secure and extremely well built, but what if the Big Island gets its own "Iniki' and the roof blows away?
Then we have still another non native bird specie competing with the native birds for habitat and food, not to mention the farmers who have to deal with still another bird eating their crops.
Maui is an example.

Please enlighten us as to how a fruit eating bird will displace native species. I get the potential damage to farmers but your statement doesn't seem grounded in reality given that all of Hawaii's Passerines are insectivores/nectarvores.

Not a TRUE reality that ALL NATIVE Hawaiian passerines are insectivores/nectarvores.Please do not discount the the poor seed eaters, like the palila! HEAR link of the palila (BTW Imiloa is 'launching' the cutest palila in their gift shop - stuffed animal, that is!)

AND to discount the non-passerine native birds like the ohelo berry munching nene???
ADDED: However, I really believe that the mosquito with its load of avian vectors is a far more damaging thing than fruit eaters. THat is WHY the care for the netting & not opening the cages, not the potential of escape!

My question was about importing birds into Hawaii. I've shared my life with animals all of my adult life and my neighbors have never heard my dog bark, my birds scream, my stereo, or any other sounds coming from our property other than my lawnmower and weedeater. And that's what... 20 minutes every other week? All our parrots by species are same-sex and can not reproduce if they escaped. But thanks for pre-judging us anyway.

I am just beginning to look into moving my Bird , also named Sweetpea, from NJ to there, and I found this organization that coordinates the move: IslandPetMovers
