Teenagers
#1
So my daughter would like to know where the teenagers "hang out". Is there a mall, a good beach, a park, etc?

I'm looking for a place with less creepers though I know you can't find any place free of them.

Suggestions? She's bored and I don't know much about this place. I'm willing to drive her just about anywhere.

I'm sorry I can't offer a specific constructive suggestion but surely there is some sort of organized activity you could get her involved in. Even something at that Belly Acres or whatever it is would be better than nothing.

I'm not a teenager anymore (35). When i was though i would hang out at friends houses, or i had a job, or i played sports. If she's old enough, i would try and get a job, at least part time. What is she interested in? There's lots of community groups doing lots of different stuff. Pick something and try it out. Surfing/bodyboarding is a great activity and a lifelong pursuit.

Bottom line, if she chooses something she is interested in and she is happy, other similar people will be there and she will make friends.

My daughters both got very involved in the activities at SPACE and made lots of friends there. SPACE isn't a very centralized location though. Driving is involved.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Most programs are already booked- the swim program at pahoa pool may be open
Check with the churches many have programs. UH has some.
You probably don't want her where the unsupervised teens hangout

In Hilo, local teens hang out at Prince Kuhio mall with their friends.

Outside, maybe Coconut Island.

There are two trouble spots where there has been some youth related violence -- the bus terminal and Kalakaua Park.

I agree there are risks to her hanging out alone. Teens go missing here on a regular basis, a lot for this small popilation. Most seem to be runaways, but not all. She needs to find one or more compadres to hang with her.

The Kea'au Youth Business center has programs in sound recording/engineering, digital media arts, and culinary arts.

The contact person is Trina Hahm-Mijo at HCC,(808) 974-7551 nahmmijo@hawaii.edu to see if they do summer programs.

I know my students hang out at the mall, but they mostly go there with people they already know. I would not let my kid just go to the popular 4 mile Beach to hang out, Richardson's with a friend is OK, and Carlsmith is good but awfully close to 4 mile with all that goes with it. I did a beach cleanup there and it was all little ice baggies and beer bottle caps, not a healthy environment for kids.

This is a tough place to get to know people even if you are an adult with your own transportation, it must even be tougher for kids. Good luck to you both.

Does the Hilo sailing club still do the free introductory lessons?

Yep, she needs something organized.
Plenty of guys will try to make friends with a haole malihini girl, for all the wrong reasons.

Another missing teen alert, this one missing for a month already:

I agree that a job cures them of complaining they are bored.
I don't know what there would be to do in Volcano. Not much teen culture there.
