Sadly, you are right there aren't any. For good beaches you need to to to the other side or Maui [

That's not entirely true, although you either have to relax what you mean by "beach" or realize that actually entering the water might mean your life. Here is a partial list:
http://alohaisles.com/bigisland/beach_puna.html Personally, I think Kapoho tide pools are one of the best "beach" areas. Beautiful and interesting waters, lots of fish. But even there, be careful, especially if you're not a strong swimmer. The currents can be strong, and you do hear about drownings.

As a coworker explained it to me when I first got here: In Puna "beach" is where the rocks meet the water. By that definition we have lots of "beaches".
Speaking of beaches, there was a huge monk seal sunbathing on the rocks on the Pahoa side of the cliffs at the end of Maku'u a few weeks ago. Very cool. Carol

![]() Beaches are definitely small but we also enjoyed just sunning on the lava cliffs ![]() We didnt hit to many areas on Kona side as Puna kept us plenty happy and busy, but those we did stop at were pretty ![]()

quote:well technically, some of these mentioned are Hilo beaches, not Puna. [ ![]() coppercoin, I'm guessing the campground you are talking about is Ho'okena, kind of the only one near Pu'uhonua O Honaunau. Two Step (Honaunau Bay) isn't a beach but a water entry off the lava. btw, if you do decide to camp you need to get the permit in advance. They're easy to get onine with the reservation system, but they don't sell them at the campgrounds, and the security does come around and tell you to leave if you don't have one. I will admit I like the west side beaches. Waialea is one I love to go to in summer when the water is calm. Kauna'oa is gorgeous and the water is great when calm, but not enough parking passes to go around. [ ![]() |
