Can you help rescue Max the cat?
#1
We have had a stray cat showing up at our door for the last few months who is unlike any cat we have ever met. Friendly, gentle, purrs with contentment when you show him any affection. One our cats will hiss and spit at him and he will blissful ignore the whole episode. We have been fine with feeding him but there is a problem. Every few days he comes back wounded. We think that originally he lived at a house with dogs and he returns there only to get chewed up. We have patched him up several times and he has healed nicely. We have no problem tending to him. Even when we are putting neosporin on an open wound or binding him up in a bandage, he will not fuss or squirm.
We don't know how to prevent him from getting chewed up. It breaks our heart to see him so beat up. He is not house broken so he needs to be outside. This area is just too dangerous for him. If anyone has room for him or knows of someone who has a place for him please let us know. He doesn't know how to use a litter box so keeping him outside is the best option. He is fine with other animals. He has never hissed at our cats even when they are giving him a hard time. We think that he doesn't understand aggression and so ends up getting attacked by animals.

We are in HPP

He sounds like an un-neutered male. You didn't mention that. It would explain the battles!
He who hoots with owls at night cannot soar with the eagles in the morning.

We are going to be taking him in to see the vet. Shhh. Don't tell him. He is very unaggressive however.

If he is un-neutered, there are many programs in the county that make it financially easier, including the coupon program at the Hawaii Island Humane Society:

Hui Pono Holoholna runs many spay/neuter programs, including a CATS ONLY spay/Neuter on Oct 18th in Keaau, & have been a part of the volunteers for the "Neuter Scooter" when they have come to the island:

Good Luck with Max!

Max's wounds are not from other cats. Big chunks of his flesh are missing, like from dogs or other large animals. Our female fixed cats are the ones hissing at him, but he turns away from them.

When you take him to the vet and he sees the injuries, he may recommend putting him to sleep. Which might be the best and kindest way to go. I cannot stand to see any animal suffer!

Rescuing cat's, I use a large dog crate with food, water, cardboard box to sleep in and a litter box, cat's are very clean and pick up using the litter box very fast!
I confine the cat for a while giving treats and attention before taking them to the vet's to be checked and fixed. Bringing them back home I keep them in the crate for a while longer letting the cats get used to each other before leaving the door open. They usually stay close, because they have learned to trust again.
You could also call 969-8279 http://www.hphhawaii.org/ see if they have any ideas.

Put him to sleep???? Why???? Strange knee jerk reaction.
Please post if he checked out okay at the vet and whether or not he has been adopted yet.

Update on Max

A Punawebber had called to say they could keep him outside. We were just waiting for him to be neutered.
We had him on antibiotics which really perked him up. He started to be a little playful but still sweet as can be.
We finally got to take him to the vet and they recommended getting him checked for feline AIDS and Leukemia. Unfortunately he had bothSad We thought that that was the end of the road for poor little Max. Both are untreatable and he couldn't be outside any more as he could spread it to others.
We agreed to have him put down. My wife was devastated. He had only been with us a short while but he had such an endearing personality.
Well Max wasn't done yet. He had won the vet staff over in the few hours that he had been there. They decided to call around to see they could find a place. Rainbow Friends said they had a cat that was quarantined with both AIDS and Leukemia and could use some company.
Hurray!
We hope to go visit him today in his new home.

Rainbow Friends takes in many of the local animals that would be put down otherwise - they are deserving of our financial support for all they do..........

I am glad he will be happy there. I wanted to take Max but hubby was of a different opinion.
