Major earthquake off Pacific NW coast
#1
While the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center does not believe we're in for a tsunami, based on known data at this point in time, they do caution people on Hawaii's coast to be aware of erratic currents etc. beginning around 10:28 p.m. tonight.

Here's their notice:

EVALUATION

THE WEST COAST AND ALASKA TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER HAS ISSUED A
REGIONAL TSUNAMI WARNING AND/OR WATCH AND/OR ADVISORY FOR OTHER
PARTS OF THE PACIFIC LOCATED CLOSER TO THE EARTHQUAKE. BASED ON
ALL AVAILABLE DATA THERE IS NO DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI THREAT TO
HAWAII.

HOWEVER... SOME COASTAL AREAS IN HAWAII COULD EXPERIENCE SMALL
NON-DESTRUCTIVE SEA LEVEL CHANGES AND STRONG OR UNUSUAL CURRENTS
LASTING UP TO SEVERAL HOURS. THE ESTIMATED TIME SUCH EFFECTS
MIGHT BEGIN IS

1028 PM HST SAT 27 OCT 2012

THIS WILL BE THE ONLY STATEMENT ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS
ADDITIONAL DATA ARE RECEIVED.

Stay safe, everyone...

I got a phone call at 7:09 from County of Hawaii but no messsage, just dead line - good thing they put a crawl on the TV or I'd've missed the whole thing!

Today is the oldest you've ever been and the youngest you'll ever be, enjoy this day!
I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.

It is strange that the sirens went and went forever on the last Tsunami and it was just a Tsunami "watch". This time it is a full on warning and no sirens at all so far.

Deborah, actually, there are no sirens anywhere yet, just the CD warnings on the media. I did call some down on the point... it is probably good to have CD phone alerts if you are down in the zone... I tried to call Cat... hopefully they are packing... there is no evacuation request on the warnings yet...BUT ANYONE DOWN SHOULD BE PREPPING TO GO UP NOW (if you do not have a packed bag...)....

Carey, I've talked to folks in Kona who have sirens going off right now and in HNL. None over here east side so far..hmmm..
