So I've been seeing Dr Matsuura for a surgery I'm going to have.
Firstly, I saw another surgeon first. He about made me cry, told me my pain wasn't as bad as I thought, and suggested that my 2-4 times a week medication use made me a drug abuser! geesh!
So I called my gp (Dr Mitchell) and asked for a different referral.
She suggested I contact Dr Peter Matsurra. My first visit was fabulous! His bedside manner is amazing and kind, and he right away found something that the younger jerk doctor missed in my hip. Something that causes pretty serious pain and is somewhat easily remedied by a simple orthoscopic outpatient surgery. He cares about my recovery and is just a caring person in general. My daughter went with me to two of my three appointments and he remembered her and was kind to her as well.
Regardless, I'm having surgery next week on Wednesday. His office staff has been so wonderful and caring.
And my favorite part of my pre surgery check up today? I had my surgery explained that I'd be getting 3-4 pukas in my hip! hehe! I love it, only in Hawaii.
So anyway, I hear bad stuff about Hilo docs on a regular basis and I can't say enough good stuff about both Dr Mitchell and Dr Matsuura.

I have Kaiser, to which I would give a B-/C+ here in East Hawaii (A+ in Silicon Valley, though).
However, back in July I took a real bad spill on wet wooden stairs at home after midnight here in Leilani. My foot was essentially detached from my leg except for nerves and vasculation.
Rescue squad (excellent) transported me to HMC. After a look from the Kaiser doc there they called Dr. Peter Matsuura at 3 am to come out and put me back together. (He reminds me of this every once in a while).
He was very conservative in his treatment of me; it was 3+ months before he gave me 100% weight-bearing status. He willingly gives his patients his time. I had short weekly visits at the beginning and again now as two of my screws are out and I am walking unassisted.
I can't say anything but absolutely the best about Dr. Matsuura. I could easily have a titanium spring for a foot right now if it weren't for him.
I understand that his mother, Dr. Ruth Matsuura was a pediatrician for many years in this area, and many, many of the local kids were taken care of by her - and that she's sort of a legend. Also understand that he served in Iraq or Afghanistan with our new congresswoman and that the family is quite politically connected. I'd like to know more, but Dr. Peter isn't very loquacious.
Dayna, I hope yours went as well as mine.

Peter is fantastic! He put my knee back together about 10 years ago. When I went through that I saw him first, was x-rayed and evaluated, and then went to get a second opinion before I committed to anything. When I went to his office to pick up my films to take to see another surgeon, I had a chance to talk with his x-ray tech and he told me that regardless of anything I should pick Peter over other choices. When I asked why he told me that Peter worked in Canada for many years and had more experience (because they don't cap the number of hours a surgeon can be in the operating room daily as they do in the US) than his counterparts here have.
Yes he's a dedicated member of our army reserve and has worked the front lines in Iraq repeatedly. In fact he told me he'd rather be there than here because the need for his services are so much greater there. He's a very kind person (of few words) and extremely talented. I doubt you could find better!
And yes my knee is still doing great!

A legend indeed. Check the Public Library or Amazon for the beautiful children's books she and her husband penned. Illustrations by the amazing incredible Linus Chao... a legend in his own right. Each book's a compact set-in-Hawaii lesson in Compassion.

I don't know, it seems like there are more good, talented doctors willing to go to Iraq than Hilo!

In the last 35 days, I have had the opportunity to meet a few of the Hilo docs that are usually not in my radar.
Dr Huydak (sp?) a surgeon, Drs Winkler, Nakamura, and Do who are 3 of HMC's hospitalists. Dr Knauss who is in ER is knowledgeable. (unfortunately got to meet him 2 x this month but thats another story!) Also ER nurse who is awesome (I cant remember her name but she used to work in ER at Harbor General in So Cal - which is aka "The gun and Knife Club".)
I have also been pleasantly surprised at the nursing staff's care and attention to detail and their willingness to deal with a patient's niele daughter (and in the second case, patient's wife) asking lots of questions!
The PT's - Delaney - is awesome even if mom hates him! He puts up with her and encourages her despite her disliking what he is there to do!
And as always Dr Laurie Hopman stays on top of the whole thing overall.

I've two occasions over the years requiring me to go to Hilo ER - both times awesome treatment.
Second time involved Dr Matsuura, both at the ER and several follow ups at his office. We are indeed blessed to have him.

I had surgery at the Hilo Surgery Center or clinic. I can't remember what it was called.
Everyone there was fabulous! Dr. Matsuura has been so AWESOME and friendly. He remembers me from the time before, always asking how my daughter is.
I'm healing, up, 1.5 weeks post hip surgery and went to the makuu market today! He did a great job and I'm healing quickly.
