My first reaction was to crack a joke and ask "Is it you?" but I have also noticed the high number of unresolved missing people here, especially women of all ages. On the Mainland people can just get on the bus, drive or hitchhike away and no knows, but here you pretty much have to get on an airplane, with all the TSA tracking that goes with air travel. So if these people aren't leaving the island, where are they now?

I know from teaching in Hawaii schools that many of the "missing" kids are here still on the island, often living with family members who are hiding them from other family members (local families don't always agree on what is best, like families everywhere) or hanging out with older teens who have houses or apartments, but the many, many other missing people are harder to figure out. I lived in a county in Oregon that was close to the same size and population as Hawaii County for 25 years, the few missing persons cases warranted annual "where are they" articles in the local paper, because they were so rare. Why do so many people disappear here?

Yes, Carol, I'm glad this question has come up. I've been here 13 months and am startled at the number and frequency of missing people. You know...it would be so easy to dispose of a body in our jungles here! Creepy, thinking about it.

One other thing that concerns me. About 2 weeks ago a homeless man was shot and killed in downtown Hilo area. As far as I know, there are no suspects arrested. One of our own people (I was told his name was Steve) who sat on the edge of the street in Pahoa town was beaten up and perhaps left for dead. He did manage to get to his house and three days later he died. In the same week, a person (female?male?) was hit on Hwy 130 somewhere between Pahoa and Kalapana. Now, the hit-and-run victim is hear-say because I haven't seen any news on it. But if true, then, I am beginning to wonder if there is someone out there victimizing our homeless folk. I might include here that I watch too much Criminal Minds so my mind is twisted sometimes. Still, I wonder.

Finally, one young man, age 17, was reported missing in October, 2011. He was a curly-haired blond with deep-set eyes. I saw him many times in Pahoa and notified the police three times. Then he turned 18 and I quit notifying the police. But I still see him. So some of the missing might be trying to be "invisible" due to problems at home.

Are there really that many missing people? Do we hear when they're not missing anymore? Does the TSA really look out for missing persons?

I tried to find a list of missing people in Hawaii but it's not easy. The best I could do was:
https://www.findthemissing.org/en
If you search for Hawaii there are only 62 cases for the whole state, of which only 10 or so are on the Big Island.
Still too many but is it really "a lot"?

Nana valley - Could you mean Steve, the fellow with the head injury who always gives the shaka and lives near Leilani? I hope not - but its sad to know that anyone has been victimized. For a while I lived in a place where anyone "different" in any way had to really watch out. I am glad not to live in such a place now. I want to keep things that way.

It may be easier to "disappear" here than in many other places. I worked for CPS so much of what I'm hearing rings true for local kids/families. Nana Valley, being a CM lover...this made me laugh out loud!

We posted on this last August...

According to the missing persons darabase at NamUs.gov there are 61 missing persons in Hawaii. The similar population size states of Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island have 10, 10, and 16 respectively. Massachusetts with 6 times the population has 64 missing persons. Illinois 12x pop 154 MPs. Texas 20x pop 591 MPs. California 28x pop 912 MPs. If HI had the same population as CA, then we would have 1708 misssing persons.
