Calcium Carbonate versus Dolomite Lime?
#1
Opinions for PH help on newly turned 800 year old forest mulch.

Calcium carbonate being almost 1/2 the cost.

Calcium carbonate is half the cost because its essentially just calcium. Dolomite lime also has magnesium in it, which I suppose accounts for the price increase.

Edited to include:
The dolomite lime is typically used to lower your PH for highly acidic soils. People who have highly alkaline soils generally don't use dolomite lime.

If you want to lower the PH of your soil dolomite lime will help, but with the huge amount of rain here you will probably have a lot wash away unless you can find some effective way of mixing it in extremely well

Never underestimate the power of the dark side.

Our local soils are notoriously deficient in magnesium, and this lack can affect the growth and health of many plants. So if you are interested in gardening, especially food crops, dolomite is the way to go.

as a side affect... Lime will also kill moss fast... ie the kine that grows on older packed cinder driveways etc in really wet areas

Moss is a tough choice for me, it's really pretty and cool to look at - especially taking photos of it close up with a macro lens, but it's also very slippery which is a bad combination with cracks in the lava and sharp lava rock I almost fell down a crack the other day slipping on moss.

Never underestimate the power of the dark side.
