I was doing some google earth stuff and saw "Moutain View Landing Strip" which reportedly has an 1800 foot runway. While researching (but finding little information on it):

I also found a reference to a Pahoa landing strip... but no further information. Anybody anything about these airstrips?

I'm going to take a guess - - since the Mt View runway is owned by KEAAU AGRICULTURAL LAND CORP., it may have been used for crop dusting planes when the sugar cane fields were in production. When I lived on Maui, the cane fields were regularly sprayed by biplanes. They don't require a very long or smooth runway for take offs and landings.

The old Pahoa landing strip is on Highway 130 on the Pahoa side of the Water station. You can see the Orange warning spheres on the utility lines next to the highway. It was used by crop dusters and more recently by Green Harvest, although it hasn't seen any use in the last decade.

There is also a landing strip just south of Vacationland.You can see it in Google maps at this location:

They just used the Pahoa post office back in the 70's,don't ask how I know !!

years ago sugarcane dominated both areas for miles inland on each side of the hwy, Pahoa cane was more towards The Shire/Hawaiian Sanctuary area (they just tore down the rusted old factory right on hwy130 a couple years ago).
Upper Puna had even more cane, both side of the hwy (mostly mauka side) from Kea'au shopping center on up to NKulani/SKulani all the way past Glenwood (all former Shipman property, a triangle of 10 miles of HPP/Kaloli Pt area coastline, on up to Thurston Lava Tube at the top point)
save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

There's one in Kurtistown as well, between Huina and Kuaaina streets. It shows up on Google Earth/Maps as Airstrip Road but I don't know if it's passable.

Years ago during the heyday of the sugar industry, these landing strips were used for the crop dusting planes. The one at Mountain View is still there but inaccessible. It's next to the baseball field between Pszyk and S. Lauko roads. There is one that still looks usable and is accessible up Stevens Rd along the Hamakua coast although it's surrounded by tall eucalyptus trees.
