So, I know this guy named Richard. He (used to) live in a tent near the water, and fish in a small rowboat for his meals. Recently I was fishing down at kaimu and he approached me and my friend. He asked us "how far is it to Halape" my friend and I took one look at each other and started laughing. Upon seeing he was serious we told him ~ 25 miles and that it is a treacherous journey in the coastal waters (especially in a 2 oar rowboat! Lol!). So whatever it was like 4 pm and there was no way he was launching that late in the day...
Next thing I know i'm reading this on damon's site:

I am currently unsure of his whereabouts but I know he has spent time before at:
Hilo Tropical Gardens
1477 Kalanianaole Avenue,
Hilo, Hawaii 96720

I do believe he would be an interesting person for your documentary. FYI, to my knowledge he doesn't /didn't use a kayak ever, just his little rowboat. Poor guy.
Anyways, the best I could do hope it helps!

Hi Jim-
I'm from Alaska, I know how independent types can be. Hopefully he's okay! He would be perfect, too. If you know of anyone else, or if you hear from him, send them my way
