Coast Guard looking HPP Cliffs
#1
Just watch a chopper in the dark looking for someone at the HPP cliffs.
Just pray it is not a kid. Don't think they had any luck. Really hoping
that some family's lives have not forever changed tonight.

I saw one of the helicopters this evening heading out from Hilo and passing over the Kaloli Pt. cliffs. Half an hour ago one came back and another has just gone by (about midnight) heading back to Hilo. The surf isn't too bad but it's a very dark night (no moon yet) so if someone is in the water it would have been tough to find them. I hope they did though if that's what's going on.

HAWAIIAN PARADISE PARK, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A Big Island man who fell from a rocky area and struck his head while fishing near Hawaiian Paradise Park on Tuesday has died, according to reports from the scene.

Hawaii News Now has learned that a body recovery operation involving a helicopter was conducted at dawn on Wednesday, shortly after a volunteer firefighter located the body on a pebble beach in the area and called in his position.

According to Big Island officials, the man was fishing at around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday when he fell, hit his head, and was reported to be floating face down in the water. A search and rescue operation at the time of the incident was hampered by high surf, strong winds, and poor visibility.

Sources at the scene say the man may have fallen as much as 30 feet and was found between 300 and 400 yards from where he fell.

It is very sad. We have lost at least one a year here in HPP since I've been here. Can't fence in the ocean. People just have to be careful.
I guess there are so many worse ways to go. I know that is not what his family and friends want to hear. Sorry for
their loss, all of them.

Saturday there were 2 kids who were trying to ride the waves right there at the cliffs at the end of Maku'u, one on a surfboard and one on a boogie board. They had to jump down into the water about 6 feet to get in. The waves were coming from about 3 different directions and really pounding the rocks, plus the edges had wicked rip currents sucking out. Their friend thought better of going in and stayed on shore. I had no idea how they were going to get back out of the water in those conditions. There were a lot of people watching, I think most of us were checking if our cell phone worked if we needed to call 911. It is one thing to slip and fall in there, it is a whole lot different to get into the water in hazardous conditions by choice.
