Hawaii County Closes Hot Ponds at ‘Âhalanui Park After Person Allegedly Gets Sick Swimming in Pond

The Department of Parks and Recreation closed ‘Âhalanui Park in lower Puna on Thursday, September 26, after learning of an unconfirmed report that a member of the public allegedly became sick after swimming in the park’s hot pond.

Signs were placed at the park in 2002 warning that the geothermally heated water is not disinfected and that swimmers should not enter the water with open wounds because of the risk of bacterial infection.

The signs were put up at the request of the widow of a 72-year-old man who died in 2001, two days after going swimming at Ahalanui with sores from psoriasis – an immune disorder — on his legs.

Oh no. I hope it's not closed for good. It's a great place for the kids. Thanks for posting this. It's a long drive down there for us and I havent been reading the paper.

A young friend of ours was hospitalized for ecoli infection after swimming in the pond. His mother said she had seen turds floating by. I haven't entered that biological experiment in years.

[:0]OMG!

A lady that has a farm on Pohoiki Road had to have two of her toes amputated due to swimming there a couple years ago.

The question is, how is the County supposed to clean it? This is beyond disgusting, and so dangerous. Ugh!

County can "solve" this problem the same way they "address" similar issues: simply declare that the pond is "private", such that County "can't" maintain it.

If it's already "public", I'm sure County can sell it cheap.

Dangerous Bacteria pool. I know two people who got Staff infections after going in with small cuts.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

hmmm, wondering if the pond was closed for five days and open only on weekends if the ocean would have time to "clean" it out each week.

Poop floating by lol
get real!
The large pond is flushed with many thousands of gallons of fresh artesian spring water every day (constantly flowing in) not to mention the salt water that also enters at times at other end too...... the paranoid hypochondriacs need to chill before they ruin it for all the normal people here, dont blame it for YOUR probs... these so called 'sick people' were already sicko!...
Ive been in both of the hot ponds hundreds of times and have never had a staph infection etc. etc.

I have always been a little wary of water that is close to body temp & salinity (anything that CAN grow in it CAN grow in us....
UCCCKKKYYY)

Hubby has refused to even stick his toes in after an early Puna Development meeting we were at when one of the ladies stated that was THE best place to give birth, & that she, & lots of her friends, had - DH's ICK factor went through the stratosphere on that! (they were trying to get the PDC to back a 'dolphin birthing' center there (where dolphins would assist human birthing.... my question was always 'Why in the world would anyone think dolphins would WANT to assist birthing of humans'.... but that is a whole 'nother Puna adventure....
