Property Taxes
#1
http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/articles/...ocal02.txt

"At the same time, Puna, with the largest population and most parcels of any district on the Big Island, is returned two dollars for every dollar its residents contribute into county coffers."

I find the latter very shocking. I really doubt that is statistically accurate that Puna is getting 2.00 back in services for every 1.00 in property taxes. Especially taking into account the poor infrastructure and overall lack of services Puna has currently.

I agree...

kim Says that The needs are greater there, and the responsibility of county government is to collect in the fairest manner and distribute where the needs are greatest.

I guess he is talking about Puna? If so, I don't see where the money is going, unless he is talking about the civic center they are building? hahaha No doubt, I don't see any new roads...

From my understanding the reason why Kona has a bigger tax is because of all the resorts... Wish hilo had some decent resorts like kona does.

Anyway, I really don't see how the money is going to puna, if so where is it going? If kona is mad, then I think Puna should be mad since the funds aren't making it out of Hilo.

I'm willing to bet its a typo in regards to the property taxes/services ratio for Puna. It just doesn't make any sense at all. As you don't see any tangible results on the ground.

As I've said Hilo is a black hole- tax dollars flow in. but very little flows out to the rest of the island.

I've read that 41% of the overall property tax revenue comes from the Kaupulehu, Waikoloa, Mauna Kea, and Mauna Lani resort nodes.

I bet a lot of money goes to do brothers, uncles, and cousins for studies and reports on what do with tax money.

The county budget should be public record.

Re: Hilo resorts....just think if the Waiakea Villas on the Wailoa had actually been maintained & as the resort it started out as... Hilo did have some very nice vacation properties. Hilo used to be THE vacation spot on the island.... I still think this side has more interesting things to do, and the rainforest aspect could bring tourist that are not drawn to the Kona aspect - but then you would have to deal with tourists & all, & many do not want that either... Some developers have announced plans for investing in Puna & East side resorts, but I haven't seen anything but longish range plans.

The county budget is public record.

You can look at the general categories on line or go down to the county offices and take a look at specific items.
