Fish Die off in Kapoho

Okay so the fish kill was in the newspaper last week but last night was talking to someone who lives in HI Acres and that same day as the fish die off here, a big bubble of mud came up in their HA pond and killed a bunch of their fish too. The water lilies around this mud blob are also dying now.

Any thoughts? Any one else have this experience?

Please update us (anyone) if the source of the problem is found. Did they get the water and mud tested? Did they call the BOH/DLNR or whoever takes care of that? (DLNR came to our place when a baby whale beached itself, etc. as a kinda example) Can they do research on the fish to find out what killed them? Was this a brackish pond with warms areas in it?

It would seem some kind of expert would be able to tell us what happened. Is this somehow connected to volcanic activity in lava tubes or something? At least the incidents should be recorded somewhere, no? It's a sign of something. What is it?

Did those people in HI Acres take their fish or mud sample in to be tested? Or report it to anyone except you? Nothing can be done to ascertain source of event if authorities/scientists are not notified right away. Then, if they don't tell you how to take specimens until they can get there, you can point a finger. Not that that will help you to identify the reason for these seemingly anomalous events...

After reading through all the posts on this I am trying to figure out who Rene was referring to when she said "Then, if they don't tell you how to take specimens until they can get there, you can point a finger." It doesn't seem like anyone here is pointing fingers, just asking questions.

In the movies, that is usually an indicator of a coming eruption, just like the steam venting before St. Helens.

Kapoho is right in the middle of the outlet for the giant lava tube going from South Point to Kapoho, hence Lava Zone 1. There hasn't been any reports to indicate a hot spot is moving again but it isn't possible to track much beyond the main tube with any resolution and there are networks of side tubes. Or it may have just been some trapped gas bubbles that released.

there is no "main tube" going from South Point to Kapoho. South Point is on Mauna Loa and Kapoho is on Kilauea.

If there's "a" lava tube connected to Kapoho, it's more likely coming from Kilauea Iki. According to West Hawaii Today:

"The 1959 Kilauea Iki activity was followed in January 1960 by a monthlong eruption in lower Puna that destroyed the town of Kapoho and created new land at the easternmost point of the island. Some HVO scientists treat the 1959 Kilauea Iki and 1960 Kapoho eruption as a single event, since Kilauea continued to inflate following the end of the 1959 eruption — a sign that pressure continued to build as magma was fed into the volcano. In fact, some lava that erupted at Kapoho resembled that which erupted at Kilauea Iki the month before, proving that Kilauea’s summit and east rift zone are connected by a continuous magma conduit. Only through such a conduit could magma from the summit move all the way to the eastern tip of the island, about 37 miles distant, in a matter of weeks."

Has anyone considered that the fish kill happened around the time of the accident at PGV? If memory serves, they were within a day or two of each other.
