Meeting with tour helicopter operators
#1
A friend of mine called and told me about the possibility of a public meeting with the air-tour companies, FAA, and DOT. The purpose is to open dialog with the tour companies and hopefully resolve some issues that everyone can live with.

The DOT will facilitate the meeting, when and where TBA. I was told this should happen within a few weeks.

This all hinges on whether or not the air-tour companies choose to attend.

I was asked to post this on Punatalk and get a rough idea of how many people would be interested in attending this meeting should it happen.
Please reply to this thread and keep and eye out for the announcement.

The copters don't seem to be an irritation in my residence area.
When I do notice them on some days, such as Monday this week, I always check in at the HVO web page to read their updates. [8D]

I'll be there. An actual possibility to be heard - I can't believe all the whiners aren't jumping on this. Over 2000 reads on just this one post: http://punaweb.org/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14388&SearchTerms=helicopters

If history is any guide, tour operators will be given a free pass as long as their tours are "of critical importance to the island economy".

I suggest a direct approach: let's all charter some helicopter tours of the tour company headquarters and homes of their CEO -- a little "education" might help them to better understand the "problem".

My husband and I will most definitely be there and we'll bring some friends if possible. Please keep us informed of the date/time. This is most encouraging.

4dognight, I don't think enough people know about or feel comfortable with forums such as Punaweb or you would get a lot more response. If you really want a good turnout, we need to put the word out in many more places, online, local papers, signs in neighborhoods, etc...I will be glad to help with this.

I do like Kalakoa's idea of chartering our own heli-tours over the CEO's AND PILOT's homes. Only we would need to fly low over ALL their homes ALL day, EVERY day for them to get an idea of what it's really like for some of us down here. And we'd need at least four copters to do this. That said, I'm in [Wink]

Even if the air tour companies won't attend, it would be really helpful to have a meeting so we can gather more momentum on this.

Realized it would be easier/cheaper (and probalby faster) to invite the tour operators over for lunch -- as long as it's clandestine, so the pilots can't quietly avoid the area.

Is there an official reason as to why the choppers fly over peoples' homes rather than flying around the coastline out at sea a bit? Seems like in the event of mechanical problems a relatively smooth-surface water landing would probably work out much better for passengers with inflatable vests than a much harder landing on rough rock/trees (given the swinging rotors). Do the doors on choppers detach with a level pull and push from the inside? That would probably need to happen on the way down or soon thereafter before water pressure on the exterior makes opening doors difficult.
