Hi All! I just moved to the Upper Puna area a couple weeks ago and am trying to plan a small, personal veggie garden for cool and warm season. I am from the south (Tennessee) and have experience veggie gardening there, but this is a whole new world for me! I looked over the forums and didn't see what I wanted to know, so thought I would just.. ask
Basically, I am planning on doing container gardening under the awning of our cabin to protect from the rain and have a little more soil to work with. With this in mind, I was wondering what plants you guys think may do well in Upper Puna? I will be experimenting these first couple of years with several plant types, and many I've seen grown quite well in Lower Puna area. Some I had in mind are: spinach, kale, yams, tomatoes, sweet onion, green onion, bell pepper, chile pepper, different types of squash, lima beans, green snap beans, and japanese eggplant.
Any advice, criticisms, thoughts, ideas, questions... are welcome and encouraged! I think this my first post on here, although I've been reading along and learning lots for a while now. Thank you all in advance for any advice, tips, etc!
ALOHA!

What is your soil like?
Potatoes work well in containers.

Have you had trouble from Pickleworms? They are the larvae of a moth that targets various kinds of squash and melons. They lay eggs in the blossoms.

I am in Hawaiian Acres off Road C. So about 1200 feet and getting about 15 feet of rain. I don't have the money for greenhouse materials yet, but eventually (within a couple years) I would love to switch to greenhouse growing. The soil here is.. not good.. to put it mildly haha. It's mostly cinder. I am wanting to do container gardening though... thanks for the info thus far and the questions! Keep em coming!

I'm in Eden Roc at 1,700 feet. Also about 15' of rain (150" to 200", hard to tell from the rainfall maps). Everything sounds the same as Hawaiian Acres except a little higher and colder. No soil. I understand that a greenhouse is the way to go.

A cool method for gardening is called companion planting. There are multiple reasons for companion planting one is nourishment some plants like nitrogen fixers can benefit heavy feeders if planted in tandem. Other plants can help keep insects away from your crops when planted as a companion, some insect repelling plants are: catnip, lemongrass, citronella, comfrey and neem. Planting these companion plants around your green house can help make a much healthier environment for your foods to grow in!

I had two cucumber crops infested with pickle worms. I now use an organic insecticide called spinosad which seems to work really well. I didn't see a single worm last time I grew cukes.

One thing I have t offr you all is soil..... I a 15 fet deep in it. We hae an area behind th house where we ar chipping away at a berm. I have a big tractor so if you come over prpared to use a pic to loosen up some of th soil we can scoop and dump into your truck. I have done this for a numer of peole. The soil i this ara is very clay filled... but mixing clay with cinder is awesome. The clay is high nutrient. This is an old cattle ranch that wa never planted in sugarcane and therefore never saw the arsenic problems you see up on the hamakua coast.. Feel free to contact me to come get soil on a non raining day.

So, that's also me up there as 'bananahead'... accidentally posted under my roommates screenname.. woops. I've heard mention of 'companion gardening', I will definitely look in to this further regarding the particular crops I am trying here. I think I will just play around and keep everyone posted under a new thread regarding how the crops do over the next few months. Thank you, Pam. I will ask my roommate if he would like to come scoop some of your soil. What an awesome offer! Aloha Rho
