I am wondering if anyone out there can help me out. I want to set up an aquaponics system on my land, but have very little time, and so am looking for a small-ish complete system (to feed a family of 4 or thereabouts) that can be easily/quickly assembled. They do exist online from the mainland, but shipping is impossible (well, not impossible, but very expensive).

Friendly Aquaponics in Honokaa has a couple of nice small designs you can build yourself. They also have family and commercial designs and training available.

Too bad you just missed their free aquaponics farm tour on the first Saturday of the month.

do you mean aquaponics or hydroponics?
Hydroponics is a lot simpler and less costly since it can be passive (no electricity input)i.e. pumps and aeration.
Try talking to CTRHR at UH Hilo on Komohana St.

Definitely aquaponics. Thanks for asking! I just saw a video on YouTube about a guy in Nanawale who has set up what looks like an innovative system which doesn't need an air pump, and instead uses a vortex to aerate. Anyone know how I might be able to get in touch with him?

I'd still talk to CTRHR.
They may even know the person in Nanawale.
This is because many people doing ag contact them.
My best wishes to you in your efforts- you are what we need here.
And many more.

Delta, you can contact them through Facebook or their website:

It is a great system that still utilizes a water pump, the return water is jetted along a circular surface to create the vortex (totally tubular!) (aquariums have utilized venturi aeration... this is an old now new aeration)
Hope you enjoy!

Home Depot has a very compact one that contains all the essential elements except the fish tank and the cinders for the cinder box:

They don't carry it locally but if it doesn't specifically say HI in the no shipping, then it supposedly can be ordered by the Hilo store through their California store, haven't actually tried that yet.
Amazon carries most of the components and even whole systems but the shipping is prohibitive.
