Best Poke
#1
Does anyone have a favorite place to buy poke? My brother is coming to visit here tomorrow and he's crazy about poke. He heard Hilo has some of the freshest best tasting poke in all Hawaii. But where to go? It doesn't have to be in a restaurant....grocery store would be fine also. All opinions are welcome!

The best is to make your own, and it really is easy.
Ahi , cut into cubes , find a private fisherman selling fresh caught fish from roadside [Big Grin] Limu fresh or dried (which you soak for a few minutes, squeeze drain and roughly chop). Red pepper flakes, some large flakes sea salt and a little bit of sesame oil. I also add sesame seed and some shaved onion. Alternately NOH foods sells a POKE mix that I believe you can purchase in the supermarkets or drug stores on the hawaiian aisle. and just add to your fish. So do try maiking your own it is way fresher than what you buy in the markets. I use to buy in the markets but not since I've been making my own

If you don't make your own poke, Suisan fish market at the boat harbor has really good poke and a lot of choices. You could have a poke tasting!

Laurel thankyou for the recipe. That sounds delicious! I love eating the raw fish here. The first time I ordered Ono in a restaurant it wasnt cooked in the center and I didnt know what to do. I just figured that was "how it was supposed to be" and went ahead and ate it. It practically melted in my mouth. I was a convert from then on.

I like KTA's poke. They also have a big selection. The creamy, spicy Ahi is one of my favorites.
On Oahu we did an intentional cruise of many poke proprietors and Ono Seafood was a really great place.

Poke To Your Taste -- haven't been to their "location", but they used to have a fleet of trucks, one was parked at the corner of Ilima.

Poke to your taste has the best poke hands down! Most of the big supermarkets get there fish from Thailand and its treated to retain its color.

It's been awhile but I also found the KTA poke to be very good and with a wide variety to choose from. If making your own "standard" poke be sure to use the dark roasted "black" sesame oil. Regular light roasted oil is a poor substitute. Ground kukui nut is also called for but some ground cashew nut will work. I also prefer a little Shoyu substituted for the salt. Rather than adding pepper flakes I make some potent pepper water to be added to taste while eating. Otherwise I like LauralJ's recipe Wink
