I heard that Hawaii was sending 17,500 of it's homeless back where they came from with one way tickets... A joke, right?

I think that it is an offer, and legit.

Saw it on the news. Not sure what the motivation will be for the homeless to leave, even with a free ticket.

It's a $100,000 program. Let's say they have 1 worker to run the program at a $50,000 a year salary (booking tickets, filing out applications, etc.). That leaves $50,000 for tickets. Average ticket cost to the mainland is, let's say $650, that's about 77 plane tickets. So instead of 17,500 homeless in Hawaii, we now have 17,433. Problem solved.

A lot of the homeless came from the mainland the same way. Many States used to give them a month of support and a free ticket to Hawaii if that was their last check from that State.

It wouldnt take me a yr to book 77 tix to mainland. I would say about a month at most to do apps and book tix.

No, the guy running the program will collude with his buddy the booking agent, so you'll see this listed as 50 tickets at $1000/each in the accounting reports that nobody bothers to read.

One other thought - if there are homeless that would prefer to go back to their mainland state, with a tix and a few bucks I think this is a great program. I would add a caveat that you could not return here within 5? 7 ? yrs and collect social welfare again until that time has elapsed.

This should not be the send you home to visit mom for a month program and back here homeless and on welfare again.

It's a government program, so I assume it'll take them months just to organize and set up the office before they can start accepting applications from the homeless. If it did only take a month, it's doubtful any worker would apply for a one month state job, and from what I've seen in other departments, they're not going to ask a reluctant existing worker to accept extra responsibility. Sometimes I can barely get a state or county worker to answer a question that's clearly within their job description.
