Video about the Universe
#1
This is more for the science/astronomy geeks here and the tenuous link to Puna and Hawaii is that the group who produced this from The University of Nottingham have a strong association with astronomy on Mauna Kea, especially UKIRT, and is also where I worked before arriving here many, many years ago, and still continue to collaborate with them.

When I saw the first few seconds I thought I was going to hate it but ended up loving it. It's part of the Sixty Symbols outreach project the university has been doing for a little while now (http://www.sixtysymbols.com/) and some of those videos include work done at UKIRT and on Mauna Kea. Some of the (brief) astronomical images you see in the video are from UKIRT. Anyway, hope you enjoy it.

Wow, this is excellent, but I think I'll go have some coffee to really be able to comprehend it. I'll have my older son watch it later after school. This would be great to have as some kind of background video on a screen at a science fair- where people are sort of milling around.

Tom:
Fun Video, but I must confess I got more understandable information from the Second video "How the video was made!"

Very cool, Tom. Yeah, I started out hating it too, but then it got good, didn't it? I've been watching sixty symbols for awhile now... love the vids where an actual PhD breaks down something like why light passes through glass or the physics of Portal .... good stuff.

unknownjulie - hope your son was able to help but don't feel bad, that song went through the scale of the universe very quickly and a bit of artistic license was used which I also found confusing, but also found it very entertaining! Mikewj is correct, the video about how it was made is much more understandable albeit less fun, but explains some of the analogies used - http://youtu.be/5vZ6cwDXVF0

Another video people might be interested from Sixty Symbols is one about actually observing on Mauna Kea and UKIRT. No music and it's now out of date although I remember very well the earthquake described in the video as I was the one that was called for help that night! It's here - http://youtu.be/yn5pHqENfJA
