OFFICIAL name of the island?
#1
Someone from Oahu recently said,
"You guys still call it 'the big island'! I thought we were all told it now has to be called 'Hawaii'."

I thought that I read that the official name of the island is "The Big Island of Hawaii" but I don't remember where I got that.

Anybody got the real scoop? History, stories, opinions?

We are the County of Hawaii,
not the County of The Big Island.

I think it's always been Hawaii officially but Big Island popularly and unofficially. Lately I've noticed a swing away from BI to Hawaii. May be some sort of branding exercise.

Dunno... This island's name is called "HAWAII" ... AKA "Da big island"... When people say they are going to Hawaii, the really mean Oahu for the majority of them. But the Whole Island chain was named the sandwich islands from cook.

I would imagine in few million years (if the human race can hold out) people coming to Hawaii will eventually will be saying the right words. But it's gonna be awhile before Oahu is the size the Kauai and Hawaii has moved off the hot spot. There is already a new island coming up they even named it but it escapes me.

Apparently all the island have nicknames like Oahu AKA The gathering place. Maybe the gathering island would be more appropriate?

Too confusing for most to call it Hawaii.

George Applegate (former head of Big Island Visitor's Bureau) indeed told me a few years back they are trying to rebrand the Big Island as "The Island of Hawaii" as it sounds more exotic and inviting.
