Plumbing Question: Air Admittance Valves (AAV)
#1
Are air admittance valves approved for use in Hawaii in lieu of cutting a hole in your roof for the plumbing vent pipe(s)?

As I understand it, an AAV allows the plumbing to vent one-way and prevent the sewer gasses from backing up into the house. The AVV can be put inside the house so you don't have to run that pipe up (through the roof) to the outside.

Seems like with the amount of rain we get that this would be a shoe-in. Here's one example on Amazon:

Any plumbers know if this is OK to do in Hawaii with the new building code?

No idea if they're "to code", but they are (or were) for sale at Home Despot in Hilo.

According to this website, they are approved in Hawaii. If you're still unsure, just call the planning dept.

could these be installed on the vent pipes that are already thru the roof?
I get a whiff of nasty fumes off the pipes sometimes when I am on my deck.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

The AAV assembly is not made of UV-safe plastic; they are meant to be installed indoors (eg, under the sink).
