Jet(s) overhead in HPP at 11:13 a.m.

I live down in a hole in the jungle so by the time I got outside I didn't see anything, just heard the definite jet engine roar, lasted awhile, sounded like moving from SW to NE? Most unusual!

I am so much more like I am today than I ever was before!
I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.

REALLY loud. Sounded like more than one to me. They were above cloud layer so we couldn't see them, but they sounded like the fighter jets we used to get over our houses in Calif.

around 11:20 I saw two fighters take off from the airport heading north - didn't get a really good look but they appeared to be the newer generation fighters like F-22s (or F-35s)

Two F-22 raptors did a low approach over Kona right before lunch. Probably the same ones.

You're right, they're loud.

Interesting comparison: the Boeing 787 took off right around the same time.

That thing is *quiet* for a jumbo jet, esp. compared with the fighters.

I applaud the powers of observation of my fellow citizens of Hawaii. In light of history, it may be useful to take note of any unusual military aircraft in our skies.

I think it was about ten years ago I was on the summit of Mauna Kea for some engineering work during the day and just after lunch we all heard the roar of jet engines nearby. It was so unusual we all went out to see what was going on and saw a couple of F16s chasing each other around the summit. It was an incredible sight and one I don't think any of us had seen before. Staff from several observatories went outside and many of us waved as these two jets circled us. On their last orbit the first jet waggled its wings before disappearing off into the distance (they were just a little too far off and fast moving to see if the pilot actually waved).

I've heard fighter jets take off from Hilo airport occasionally and the noise is quite distinctive. I don't think this visit was anything unusual.

I got a visual on them. Looked like they were going over 700 Mph. Was listening for a sonic boom after. Very impressive.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

Something like that, Oink! Phenergan and demoral! Together! For the first time! Hooray! (I knew I would regret it in the morning) Keep your eyes on the skies! Is Michael Jackson's doctor out of jail yet?

Next time you hear a jet, jump on the computer and check out this radar map:

http://www.flightradar24.com/20.23,202.59/6

I believe it tracks commercial and military flights, I have seen some military planes listed.
There's also a playback feature, so if you put in the correct time you can probably go back and check on the jets over HPP.
Sorry, no helicopter tracking.
