ATV's

I have been wondering about the use of ATV's (4 wheelers, Rangers etc) on the Big Island. Road use? Encouraged? discouraged?

Not allowed on Roads in HI.

Not allowed on "public" roads, but "privately owned" roads may set their own rules and/or decline to enforce.

Some ATVs may qualify as a "farm vehicle", and there is theoretically a way to register these, at which point it could be operated on some public roads (eg, ones without a minimum speed limit).

I see, well the farm vehicle use seems workable. It also seems possible to register as a motorcycle. Just put blinkers,horn and mirrors it should be street legal at that point.

and safety check, registration and insurance. but i think cops leave you alone if you are following rules of the road unless someone complains. although i have seen them stop kids and haul off the atv...
