We are making a move to Opihikao and are finding ticks on the dogs AND on us! What's the best way to keep them at bay??? Anyone? It's a big yard. [:p]

It's funny, I've never even seen a single tick while here, though apparently they're all over the place.

This is a first for us too HS... we are becoming vigilant for sure... just wondering what to do that isn't poisonous to our pets or ourselves??

OH MAN, blood suckas! just spread a bag of EcoSmart insect granules around if you don't want to use some of the more potent stuff (though I do have a 1/2 container of some of that from the site cleanup today, if you want to try it)

Carey - I would LOVE that! Thank you...let's talk ticks! LOL Daniel...thanks for the heads up on the collars. Are those ones you have to get from the Vet or are they over-the-counter?

Dells has those collars, if the big boxes do not...
(brings back memories of a field study decades ago where we ran into a tick-fest...actually ran in to the local town & got flea collars for our legs so we could continue the survey....EECCCKKK!!)

We had a really big problem with them in Mountain View. Deer ticks and plain old brown ones. Our dogs had flea/ticks medicine but I found they would hitch a ride in the house on them and then jump off to die. I was very pregnant and one crawled off a dog on to me..we sprayed the yard after. Hated to use the chemicals but my fear of ticks while pregnant beat the fear of chemicals.

wow, Carey...how clever! Wearing tick collars on your legs, lol
There are monthly applications for the dog you can use, too.

Not clever, FREAKED...there were four of us out in the field, one from Europe noticed the buggas (at first none of us believed him, as we had not encountered that tick density ever in the field... then we all started crawling), & we all hightailed it to town...grabbed anything tick-killing related, as they were EVERYWHERE (the survey truck, our hair, up our pants legs ...everywhere...still gives me the jeebies thinking about 'em!
