I hope we don't get any of these. But it seems like we got a lot of invasive ants here already so it wouldn't surprise me much if they were already here in limited numbers. Nice to see them being eradicated but 1000 queens? ish.... I think that is just a dream. If they ever did get here ... It would be impossible.

I'm not sure these are the same crazy ants that have invaded Florida and other parts of SE USA that have displaced the fire ants in the last few years, but if they are, I sort of feel like because they have been causing havok on the mainland recently, and are spreading fast, somebody might "do something" to find a solution to them, whereas if it was just in Puna, nobody would do anything about it.

We already have those here (Anoplolepis gracilipes); they're usually called long-legged ants in Hawaii and they're ubiquitous in the lowlands. I got them living in my plant pots in Hawaiian Acres. They're not the same as the hairy crazy ant (Nylanderia fulva) that is currently invading Florida and Texas (which just makes me more frustrated that people insist on using common names but can't come up with different ones).
Unfortunately, experience at other places has shown it's not too difficult (with a lot of work) to get ants down 99% or even to undetectable numbers. But getting those last few so that they don't come back is incredibly hard. Hoping they can do it!
