We love a good breakfast out, and it's become a treat these days. What are your favorite places? We like all foods and cuisines. We usually try to eat healthy, organic and local. BUT, sometimes a hearty chicken fried steak smothered in country gravy fills the spot, or, thick and gooey pancakes, or, a 3 egg omelet, or, a heaping loco moco plate. Good coffee is a must, but I know sometimes it is lacking in some of the local places where the meal would be worth the bad coffee. Puna or Hilo areas, but we are also known to drive far for a good meal!

Luquin's in Pahoa has a very nice breakfast - fresh eggs, great pancakes, great service bc not many people know they do breakfast. They have some Mexican items on the b'fast menu like huevos rancheros. Black Rock has a pretty good breakfast, too, but more for your buck at Luquin's.
We also love Ken's of course in Hilo, but we more frequently go to Hawaiian Style in Hilo now for b'fast. Those pancakes are bigger than your head. Make sure you don't put syrup on the whole thing, bc you can take the leftovers home and put them in the toaster. They'll last 3 meals, easy!
We like to go to places that offer a great kids meal. The coffee does have to be strong and island grown. The portions are some what abundant, drive time, price, and atmosphere are always nice as well. So that's why my wife and I both cook and eat 99% of our meals right here in our home. If we go out to breakfast Burger king offers a value menu,(not usually organic), and we can usually get out of there for less than $35. We would go more local but frankly the price for a family of 6 or 7 with out kids menu's, has gotten pretty high. We are talking breakfast right?.

I agree with DTisme and if you really want that chicken fried steak,Hawaiian Style Cafe is the place to go.

My favorite breakfast: biscuits and gravy at Pearl Bakery.
Of course, this now requires a time machine...
OH you did it now Kalakoa, That was indeed the place my family and i would drive and go get breakfast. The bakery, coffee, and what eva was smoking were worth the drive. What happened? Why did they close?. We use to order, then drive up to Bird park on Maunaloa road and grind really good food. We need a time machine.

Hawaiian Style kalua pork hash & ...welll hose pancakes, can feed the hungriest appetite
for the view, Sky Garden at Imiloa (way more $$ than most, but on a beautiful Hilo morning, with the sun streaming in...
Added: If you like a baked potato with your breakfast rather than fried or grilled potatoes, then Ohana Grill
in Kalapana, the Kaimu Cafe (old Vernas) has one of the best fish breakfast, & is a nice place to chill (& their orange juice is fresh squeezed - for some reason that is rare here... yet there were a few places by us in the midwest that had fresh squeezed OJ...and not an OJ tree within a few planting zones ;~)

Off-topic, and sticking to the "facts": Pearl's pulled their permits in 2010, spent about a year and a half working with Building to get their final, then opened for about three days before being cited for zoning/use violation. They reopened several months later after receiving the required Special Use Permit, then closed again 8 months after that because County wanted them to get a (new, third) final inspection for some reason.
I have no idea why they left the island...

I recommend Black rock for a pahoa breakfast. Basic diner food. Service is good.
I would skip Luquin's.
Hawaiian Style Cafe is good too.
