#1
My dog is suddenly acting disoriented and is having trouble standing. I'm desperate. Trying to find a veterinarian who offers emergency services in Hilo area. Please help I'm really worried! Any leads would be appreciated!

Not sure about any vets who would be available on Saturday night, but East Hawaii Veterinary is open on Sunday. Give them a call in the morning, I am sure they will see you and your dog as soon as possible.

If you are a regualr East Hawaii (Now Maka`i) Vet Center client, they do offer 24 hr emergency service:

It could never hurt to call up your regular vet, if not East Hawaii...

Also try the pet hospital by the airport, they have usually been good for last minute feral spaying..so maybe???:

Thanks for the leads. I'm not a regular at Maka'i so they wouldn't take me.

I did call Aloha vet last evening, spoke with the answering service and was told an on-call vet would call me back in 15-20 minutes. Never got a call back.

My dog seems a little more coherent and less listless than last night but he's still disoriented and doing weird head movements (left and right like he's saying "no"), and sometimes his legs are buckling....but then he gets a burst of energy and seems normal. He won't drink water so we mixed it in with his food. He has an appetite and was playing with my other dog this morning. At this point we can only think of 2 possibilities: 1) He licked a toad or 2) he's having a stroke. But we need to get him a blood test asap to determine the cause.

Am about to call Aloha vet again since they seem to be the only game in town right now.

Thanks again for responding.

Aloha Vet has always been good about calling back. We've had our chow chow in on an emergency basis more than once, and always got excellent care. Not cheap, however.

This is the only vet here that is open 7 days
Monday -Friday 8:00am-5:00pm
Saturday 8:00am-4:00pm
Sunday 9:00am-4:00pm
Call first thing in the morning, I have been there on a Sunday with one of my critters, they do take new clients with emergencies

I called Aloha vet again this morning and they called back. The vet thinks it was a stroke. Based on my dog's improvement this morning the vet says he sounds like he's recovering and probably no need to bring him in today. But he gave me some instructions, and said if anything changed to call him directly and he'd see him today. Am monitoring the situation as I type this. Once again, I appreciate everyone's input.

That is also the symptoms of a dog having a seizure. If it is seizures and it doesn't get better in a few hours the seizure activity is still occurring and drugs are needed to stop it.

It is also a symptom of getting into rat/mouse poison, or eating a rat that has eaten poison. Another symptom of that is bleeding gums or blood in the eyes. Sometimes bleeding gums only show by the tarter turning black. Though the bleeding doesn't always occur with rat poison, so is only a possible indicator.

You also describe less common symptoms of leptospirosis which also has a rat vector.

These are difficult to diagnose, because either poisoning or lepto can cause seizures.

Also can be a symptom of biting a cane/buffo toad.

What kind of dog is it? How old? Please keep us updated.

My dog is back to normal. Vet says he thinks it was a stroke, not the cane toad, because he wasn't foaming at the mouth. But who knows? It happened shortly after I let him in...it was dark...normally I have the dogs in by dark because of the cane toad danger. So I'm not ruling that out.

The dog is a mix of blue heeler, shepherd, husky and maybe collie. 8 years old. Coolest looking dog I've ever had and also the smartest. Just a good, loving, loyal family dog. Hopefully he's out of the woods. We'll see.

Thanks for caring!
