Having a wisdom tooth removed
#1
My daughter saw the dentist today for xrays and a cleaning.

She needs to have her one and only wisdom tooth removed.

They quoted us a little over $600 with just injections (no gas to put her under).

She'd prefer to be put under but the Hilo Dental Clinic doesn't offer that.

I'm going to start calling around, to see what I can find in terms of prices, and techniques.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Also at the Hilo Dental place they only have the doc come in once a month from Oahu. I'd rather have a dental surgeon that lives here in case of any complications and/or follow up.

We went through this with one of my daughters who had complications, as a parent I would say your instinct about using someone on island is right. Just one tooth shouldn't be too complicated, but the state of the roots is what determines how invasive the surgery is. A root that is wrapped around the jaw can be a real ordeal, if it was my kid I would want the oral surgeon to look at the x-ray with me and talk about what he is seeing there and what the implications are. Short straight roots are far easier to extract than long twisty ones.

Hm, I'm not sure. I might need to get the xray from the office and take it to a doc to look at. The quote said "impacted" removal.

Hilo Family Dental Center.. 1221 Kilauea Avenue, Suite 100 (same building as Island Naturals) 363-3600 is the phone.. shouldn't cost too much.. as they are a part of the Bay Clinic Id say don't get too comfy with them for the long haul 'cause the Bay does have serious management problems.. and least on the doctoring side... but there are dentists there.. full time.. and it cost a sliding scale dependent upon your income bracket

As to the no gas thing.. most docs don't these days.. but once she's been numbed.. i.e. has survived her own anxiety.. she'll be fine

As I remember impacted meant it was growing into bone, usually the back of the jaw. The tooth gets pushed back as the molars in front of it come in. If it was my kid I would want to look at that x-ray for sure. Good luck finding the right person to deal with this.

Dr Stover in Hilo took out all 4 of mine - at once. I was sedated, and when I woke up I couldn't believe he was done. The worst thing about it was the large Jamba Juice I spilled on my lap on the ride home - I was pretty out of it. I think it cost me 2 or 3 grand, and I had state dental insurance at the time. He does all types of plastic surgery as well - he's good.

Last month, Dr. Wayne Atebara removed one of my husband's molar and it went very well. The cost is pretty close to what you said. The doctor office is in Hilo, by the fire station.

I had all 4 of mine out On Oahu. The only thing I can say is.. And maybe it's different for others... But, the top ones were much easier than the bottom ones. When I got my bottoms out I thought I would never go back to get the tops pulled.

Good Luck on finding a good one.

I second the vote for Dr. Stover in Hilo. He's an M.D. as well as dentist. It's been a few years but he did a difficult extraction for me under sedation that was so slick and easy that I went shopping after. He's a little pricey but well worth it.

I am so much more like I am today than I ever was before!
I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.

Dr Joan Greco is the best on the island hands down. She's based in Waimea...but has an office in Hilo.
