Mom and Pop type business's
#1
I am starting a new topic here.
Many mom and pop businesses on island, but prefer to promote just for Puna and Hilo .
I will post a new topic for just mom and pop eateries but this for those of us who like to network and keep the kala ( Money ) local.
The big box stores make it difficult for the small owners to operate in the black .
Please keep negative comments out of this new topic,we all have off days.We are all neighbors .

I shall start with 3 locally run businesses not related to our ohana other than excellent service with a smile.

1 )

Garden Exchange in down town Hilo .

A little bit of everything from tools to ferts to plants .Local run and operated.

2)

Argus Building Supplies - Best delivery prices island wide.Best pre approved house plans around.

Our ohana just paid for a 4 bedroom Argus Kit home for 30K cash.

They also have when in stock ,the best selection of Cedar island wide.

Before you go to HD or Hosador or even HPM ,please shop at Argus Building supply.

They also have a personal best list for all sorts of contractors if some one needs that extra little help, big or small.

3)

Hilo Propane - pure propane and not ag propane and offer commercial 10% off to businesses .
Great selection of propane appliances and sell aluminum propane bottles that never rust. Also a family run business. They also repair propane appliances as ag propane may be cheaper but it is 30% sulpher and that clogs up the stoves, palomas and fridges with soot and excess carbon.

I've gotta second you on Garden Exchange! Knowledgeable staff, stock that's tailor made for local needs - everything you need for sure. I've never gone all the way to Hilo for Propane - so far the guy on Old Volcano Road in Kea'au has been fine for my needs and I can combine the trip to go to the transfer station for drinking water.
Me ka ha`aha`a,
Mike

Jagged Edge Hair Salon . A woman owned business, kitty corner across Reynolds recycle across Hilo Shopping Center.Best prices on island and usually need an appointment.
I have been going there since they opened 7 years ago so i am a regular, but every where else charges 25$ or more and i pay 10 dollars every time.
Even hair styles for the wahine are half of what all the other places charge.

Where is Argus located?
Don't live there yet, but will be moving over and building in HPP hopefully within the year.

When we are there, we go to the little complex of businesses off of Rt 130 at Orchidland. Nice hardware store, some groceries, sandwich shop, gas station, convenience store, Blane's Drive in. Plus they are open really late.

Not sure about prices and to tell you the truth, don't really care. We like to support them since they are so close to where we'll be living.

Argus is great - good products and better insight ... I believe they took over the kit biz from "Trojan" as well

I have one of the Trojan plantation designs - still love the open floor plan

Doc Stanley's. This is the only retailer I've seen who priced everything so that GET adds up to an even number -- the guy doesn't have to count pennies out of the drawer, easier for everyone.
